Best Japanese Stocks To Own Right Now

Asian stocks rose on speculation China will introduce measures to stimulate the economy after exports contracted by the most since 2009 as a stronger yen pulled down Japanese exporters.

Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd. (1929), the world biggest jewelery chain had a record gain in Hong Kong after same-store sales jumped on gold demand. Aeon Co., Japan largest retailer, rose 1.4 percent in Tokyo after reporting a 9.8 percent increase in first-quarter operating profit. Fanuc Corp., a supplier of factory automation systems, slipped 1 percent, pacing losses among Japanese exporters.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index added 0.9 percent to 132.54 as of 7:31 p.m. in Hong Kong, as the Bank of Japan begins a two-day policy meeting. As we kick off a long weekend to recognize the achievements of American workers, celebrating our nation 110th Labor Day, most of us will be spending the weekend over barbeques and lawn games. But while hamburgers, hot dogs and even steaks have traditionally been menu mainstays, this year wel probably be eating a lot more chicken.

Severe drought conditions across much of the U.S. in 2012 caused feed prices to skyrocket, forcing many ranchers to sell off my cattle they otherwise would have that year. As a result beef herds are thinner than they have been in years, and the ongoing drought means the herds that are left aren growing fast enough to keep up with demand, causing beef prices to soar.

Pork isn much cheaper this year, either. A new pig illness, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, began sweeping across farms last December, killing more than 7 million piglets in the past year. That caused pork prices to surge as well, and now pig farmers are getting paid more per pound of pork, just like the cattle ranchers.

Data from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that pork and beef prices are up more than 11 percent over the past year. Prices are up 47 percent since 2009 as beef now fetches and average $5.56 per pound in grocery stores, a new record high. Chicken prices have remained relatively stable though, with USDA data showing that chicken is fetching only about $1.50 per pound.

Thanks to high beef and pork prices and the fact that Americans are trying to eat healthier, more chicken was eating in the US last year than any other meat. That the first time in more than a century that we ate more chicken than beef. That been a boon for Sanderson Farms (NSDQ: SAFM), the third-largest poultry producer in the US.

Fully integrated, producing, processing, marketing and distributing fresh and frozen chicken products, revenue at the company has grown an average 11.7 percent annually over the past three years.

It looks like you and I will be eating more chicken this 2014. Retail beef prices remain at record highs, and we consumers will likely be driven more toward comparatively cheaper chicken meat in 2014. Given this trend, loading up on shares of Sanderson Farms (NASDAQ: SAFM  ) , Pilgrim's Pride (NASDAQ: PPC  ) , andTyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  ) should be worth considering.

If you can choose between owning Sanderson Farms (SAFM) and McCormick (MKC) pick McCormick. Spice is just a better product than chicken. Well, ceramic proppant is a really, really good product. It the spice of the oil industry.

The four biggest chicken processors in the country are Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  ) ,JBS, Perdue, andSanderson Farms (NASDAQ: SAFM  ) , which slaughter 60% of all the chickens consumed in the country, and according to the National Chicken Council, the industry has invested tens of millions of dollars in technology and scientific processes to minimize any risks to the buying public. Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN  ) is pouring billions of dollars into biosimilar development in an attempt to capture lucrative markets enjoyed by several widely successful biologic drugs that are due to come off patent in the next several years. Ironically, the company knows how it feels to lose out to generic competition, with three successful biologics coming off patent in major markets. There are millions of dollars at stake, so investors need to watch both sides of the biosimilar equation. In the following video, Fool contributor Maxx Chatsko goes over the immediate generic threats facing Amgen's Aranesp, Epogen, and Neupogen.

Another selection to consider is the Market Vectors Biotech ETF (BBH). The fund has seen returns of a massive 55% since its inception and has a net expense ratio of 0.35%. This fund is centered on fewer stock selections (in contrast to the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF), so there is an enhanced potential for price volatility. Fund holdings include Gilead (GILD), Celgene and Amgen (AMGN), which make up more than 2/3 of the fund. This essentially means investors will sacrifice some of the diversification that can be found in choices like the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF, but many of the individual selections are well-positioned for gains for the remainder of the year.

Finally, beyond the Dow, the end of earnings season and M&A activity continued to move stocks. Ulta Salon (NASDAQ: ULTA  ) has soared 15.6% after it released favorable results, including same-store sales gains of 6.7% and a 23% increase in overall revenue. Somewhat weak guidance for the current quarter wasn't enough to slow the stock's advance. Meanwhile, Cooper Tire (NYSE: CTB  ) launched 40% higher after getting a $35 per-share buyout bid from Indian company Apollo Tyres. If companies see value even as the stock market pauses or corrects, then further acquisition activity could well spur the market's bull run onward.

Advisors' Opinion:

Much like the first three months of the year, the second quarter served up a mixture of good and bad economic news. On April 3, the Institute of Supply Management (ISM) announced its nonmanufacturing index fell to 54.4, a seven month low. Higher taxes and federal budget cuts were purported to blame for the slowdown. Two days later on the first Friday of the month, the Labor Department released disappointing March employment numbers: Employers added only 88,000 new jobs, fewer than any month in the past year (though the number was later revised up to 142,000). The unemployment rate dropped to 7.6%, but only because an estimated almost half million people left the workforce in March. On a more encouraging note, housing starts in March rose 7.0% to an annual rate of 1,036,000 (later revised to 1,005,000) and new home sales climbed 1.5% (revised to 1.3%) to 417,000 annualized (revised to 451,000), the second highest jump in three years. Despite the mixed signals, the U.S. equity market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, rose a modest 1.9% in April.
